Former residents at the homeless shelter Dame La Mano Crisis Pregnancy Center said they lost their state benefits as a result of some violations by the shelter.
Dame La Mano is a shelter that helps homeless mothers. But in the last few months, allegations against shelter personnel have surfaced.
Some mothers said that when they brought into the shelter WIC food or food they bought with food stamps, they were told the food was for everyone staying at the shelter and they wouldn't be able to get any after a certain hour.
"We're aware of some issues that have come up regarding WIC benefits to certain clients," said Doug McBride, the press officer at the Texas Department of State Health Service.
While sharing food for other needy mothers doesn't sound like a bad thing, it's a WIC state agency policy violation.
"One of the main criteria for WIC clients is that the food vouchers that are issued, that food is to be used by the people that it covers," said McBride.
But when a KFOX crew paid a visit to Dame La Mano to speak with Director Rosa Arellano, she told KFOX the allegations were not true.
"They pay for their food with the food stamps, and they store their food and we keep it stored for them," said Arellano.
Arellano showed KFOX where the food is stored. She said it's not labeled and that the girls know which food belongs to them. But Arellano did say she has encouraged food sharing.
"A lot of the girls sell their food stamps and their WIC, but I tell them help me keep it in the group because I work hard to support this house," said Arellano.
