KFOX 14 Speaks With District 5 Candidates

District 5 Candidates Speak Out

By Ric Dupont

EL PASO, Texas —

Early voting starts Monday and one of the city council seats to keep your eye on is District 5. Rachel Quintana has held that seat for the past four years.

Phillip Garcia has dropped out of the City Council race. The candidates still in the race are: Mike Noe, Mayela Mejia, Sonia Brown and George Atkins.

KFOX 14 asked all four of them the same questions, and here's what they had to say:

Question No. 1: What's the biggest problem on the east side of El Paso?

"Safety and security, said Atkins. “In order to do that, we have to make sure that our Police Department is adequately staffed and funded."

"We have one of the most dangerous intersections,” said Mayela Mejia, referring to the intersection near Montwood Dr. and Loop 375. "To me that is not acceptable."

"I'd like to make sure that the 375 Loop ramp project is expedited,” said Sonia Brown. “It needs to be done quickly."

"There are issues right now with taxing that we have to get the spending under control," said Noe.

Question No. 2: What makes you different than the other candidates?

"Maturity,” said George Atkins. “I’m able to be a problem-solver, and a negotiator."

"Well, I have been fighting City Hall for about two years now,” said Sonia Brown. “I'm very passionate about what I believe in."

"I think somebody with a little bit of business experience would be better suited," said Mike Noe. Noe runs a medical Practice.

"I want to have an office in District 5,” said Mejia. “People won't have to go look for me at City Hall."
