"We understand that it's a program for low-income housing, we comply with all of this, this is my list of what I have to bring in, I brought all of this in, the next notice I got was, vacate on September the 30th, with no explanation," said Nine Nichols, a Hurricane Katrina evacuee.
Nichols is one of 11 residents being evicted from complexes across the city. The complexes are for low-income families. Federal and state rules dictate whether a family qualifies as low-income or not.
"We explained to the families that this is a temporary housing for them, we weren't going to qualify them as far as their income was concerned, and the deadline for that was September 1st of 2006," Demetrio Jimenez, President of Tropicana Properties said.
Jacqueline Veal is also being asked to leave. She says she has been told that she no longer qualifies for low-income housing.
"They say my old man, the only one working at my house, and they say he is making too much money, so that's overqualified, but I'm not working, he's the only one working," Veal said.
"She is overincome, unfortunately that's what happens with overincome families, they can't live in our properties, the state has mandated that through the IRS," Jimenez told KFOX.
But Veal is upset because she said she first heard about the need for documentation last week in the form of a letter, and got an eviction letter a few days ago saying she needs to be out at the end of the week. Jimenez said all the letters went out at the same time and some families have already requalified.
"There shouldn't have been any delay, I'm pretty sure there wasn't any delay. Again, these families that we did requalify were given the notice along with Jacqueline Veal/Brown," said Jimenez.
