Jury Selection Set For Thursday In Jones And Sanchez Trial

By Danielle Chavira

EL PASO, Texas —

A pre-trial hearing pushed jury selection for the public corruption trial of former El Paso County Judge Luther Jones and former District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez until Thursday.

Sanchez and Jones are accused of rigging a contract bid for the district clerk's office in order for the company that Jones represented would win, although the bid wasn't awarded.

Both men are each charged with one count of mail fraud and one count of wire fraud.

The trial was originally scheduled for last summer, but U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo postponed it after federal prosecutors entered a large amount of evidence to defense attorneys. Sanchez also asked for a postponement claiming he was not competent to stand trial. Montalvo found otherwise.

Both men pleaded not guilty and Sanchez attended Wednesday's pre-trial hearing.
