Jury Seated In Luther Jones, Gilbert Sanchez Federal Trial

By Monica Balderrama

EL PASO, Texas —

A jury of nine women and five men were seated for the public corruption trial of former El Paso County Judge Luther Jones and former District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez.

Jones and Sanchez are each charged with one count of mail fraud and one count of wire fraud. Both entered a not guilty plea.

It all stems from a 2003 document imaging project for the District Clerk's office. Back then Sanchez told county commissioners he needed extra space to archive documents for the county.

A federal indictment accuses the men of conspiring to secure a multimillion dollar document imaging contract between El Paso County and one of Jones' clients - Altep Inc, a document managing company.

President, Roger Miller took the stand.

During opening statements, U.S. prosecutor Laura Greggory told the jurors that the evidence will show that, "Mr. Miller agreed to pay Luther Jones a third of the net profit if Altep gets the contract."

The defense team told the jury that the government offered plea deals to former office manager for the district clerk office Fernando Parra and former county commissioner Betti Flores to help prosecute Jones and Sanchez.

"My client and Sanchez are here because the information from Parra and Flores was forced, fabricated and false. That's why we're here," said John Grant Jones in opening statements.

Defense attorney for Sanchez, Orlando Mondra, addressed the trip to Las Vegas that Sanchez is accused of taking as a bribe.

"That trip was to continue modernizing the district clerk's office. There was a seminar there. Mr. Jones was helping Sanchez modernize that office," said Mondra.

Some witnesses expected to take the stand include Parra, Flores and Jones himself.
