Judge temporarily stops Socorro from annexing land

By Jesse Martinez

EL PASO, Texas —

A judge signed a temporary restraining order, which effectively stops the city of Socorro from annexing land.

Documents stated that Socorro could take no further action in its annexation ordinance until a hearing scheduled for Feb. 22.

Socorro's plan to annex several parcels of county land has been a controversial journey for the city. After threatening to take legal action against Socorro, El Paso County filed a lawsuit against the city.

The county was concerned over the legality behind the extension of Socorro city officials' terms from three to four years. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said the extension was against state law.

In a letter sent earlier this month, the county said it would file litigation to stop the annexation process "unless legal issues concerning the terms of office of the council are resolved."
