It's another long night ahead for TX DOT crews in El Paso.

Workers at the Transvisita communications center, along with salt truck drivers, are scheduled to work overnight into Friday.

Snow and ice made it difficult to get around from highways to local streets Thursday.

"The overnight hours we have another crew coming that will come in and treat the overpasses and direct connectors," Edgar Fino, a traffic engineer with TXDOT, told KFOX 14.

He also said which lane you choose can make the difference overnight Friday.

"What we focus on is the right lane,” he said, while overpasses, like the Spaghetti Bowl in central, get more attention.

"We try to treat all the lanes on the overpasses," Fino said.

But even so, accidents like one Thursday morning on the exit ramp from eastbound Interstate 10 going to U.S. 54 South and Paisano Street can cause a snag in traffic, something Fino said will happen no matter how much treatment they give a roadway.

"It's difficult in regards to we treat it. We go reload. And then sometimes it just doesn't last in regards to the material out there. It just depends on how cold or how quickly the temperature drop that we are able to
treat these areas,” he said.

KFOX 14 asked why areas like Van Horn get more trucks brought in during a snow storm like Thursday's.

Fino said rural areas simply don't have enough staff unlike urban areas such as El Paso, therefore, they need the additional crews.

Fino said the only time places like El Paso ask for additional resources is when the state emergency office opens up.

He said an event like this 24-hour storm doesn't warrant that.
