Internal Affairs Investigating Deadly Shooting By Police

This neighborhood on Emory, is one of the storm-torn sites in the city. On Monday afternoon it quickly became the scene of a shooting.

Diana Martinez, a landscaper working a few homes away said she saw police cruisers zoom by at about 2:30 p.m. She said she heard one shot, then a pause, then about three or four more shots.

Police said officers were responding to a woman's outcry about her relative threatening to kill himself. Officers showed up to the home in the 4204 Emory and heard a gunshot. Officers went inside the home to find Ecker by himself with a weapon in his hand.

"The officers gave command to the individual to drop the weapon, but individual raised the weapon at the officers. Unfortunately, fearing for their safety, the officers had no choice but to discharge their weapons," said Javier Sambrano, the spokesman for the El Paso Police Department.

Police officials said a Sergeant and two officers fired their weapons and they were all following protocal. At this time, three investigations are being conducted.

The names of the officers involved are: Sergeant Christine Whitaker, 10 year veteran, officer Amanda Vega, 4 month veteran, officer Joseph Duarte, 9 year veteran.

The El Paso Police Department's Shooting Review Team and Internal Affairs Division, the Crimes Against Persons Section and the Disrict Attorney's Office are all conducting separate investigations.
