EL PASO, Texas —

The ball keeps moving on the city's plans for demolition to build a baseball stadium downtown, and first up is the Insights Science Museum.

City Engineer Alan Shubert said demolition teams will begin to bring down the museum starting next Monday and Tuesday.

Shubert said the demolition will be a fairly standard tear-down operation which could take a few days.

Any metal in the building will be recycled. The subcontractor for the demotion is Grant MacKay Demolition Co. from Houston, who won the contract with the lowest bid.

The subcontractors will be responsible for moving and clearing the debris to the El Paso landfill and for the recycling process.

Shubert expects all the debris from the museum to be cleared by the end of March.

The contract for demolition was $1.5 million split between the museum and City Hall, but Shubert expects it to possibly come in under budget.

The city plans to implode City Hall in early April, but an exact date has not been set.

"With regards to City Hall, we don't have an exact date for you yet and the reason that we can't has nothing to do with the project. It has to do with all of the activities that lead up to it. All the relocation activities and all the infrastructure that has to be removed from the building, which is going very well, but we are still not at the point where we can give you an exact date," Shubert said.

Shubert also said wind could be a factor in next weeks demolition.

"If the winds get too high, they won't work. Part of the issue is construction safety part of the work is keeping the dust down. They're going to have to keep it wet, make sure we don't inconvenience the people and spread dust around," Shubert said.

Shubert added that there is no asbestos or lead in the museum so that won't be a factor in demolition.

Starting Monday, there will be intermittent lane closures on Durango Street, Missouri Avenue and Santa Fe Street surrounding the exiting City Hall site over the next several months.

Access to drivers and pedestrians will be available in surrounding area and access to driveways in the area will remain.

Currently, Insights Science Museum resides where the outfield of the baseball stadium will be. As soon as the debris can be cleared, construction can begin on the perimeter of the park -- specifically, the retaining wall on Missouri street.

As for a new home for the museum, plans are still in the works but they have partnered with the old Alamo Elementary and El Paso Independent School District.
