EL PASO, Texas —
A man ducking under yellow police tape that had blocked off Louisiana Street at Nations Drive for a better part of Friday told KFOX14 News crews his name was Carlos, and he said he found out his baby girl was dead when he watched KFOX14 News at 5.
His eyes were swollen and red from a day of accepting the worst possible news. He said he was instructed by police to keep details of what El Paso police called a capital murder to himself for a couple of days. He said that he eventually wants the public to know exactly what happened.
El Paso police told KFOX14 they have Irving Aaron Gomez, 21, who lives on Rio Grande Avenue in central El Paso, in custody and they've charged him with capital murder involving an 11-month-old Hispanic girl. Gomez is being held on a $500,000 bond.
According to the El Paso Times, police on scene said Gomez allegedly suffocated the girl with a pillow after she would not stop crying.
Police said the girl was taken to Sierra Medical Center around 6 a.m. Friday morning, where she later died.
This is the 19th recorded homicide of the year, compared to 16 in all of 2011.
Jose Vargas said he's a maintenance man at the duplex where the alleged crime took place. He said he knew the baby's mother.
"She was always very quiet and very calm," Vargas said. "Sometimes, she would get here alone with her daughter, but yesterday is when she got here with that man. Last night when they left, they had the baby in their arms, but I couldn't see her face."
