Indian Terror Attacks Hit Home In El Paso

EL PASO, Texas —

On a Sunday morning, a fire burned at the Southwest Hindu Temple Society. As the flames flickered, Indian Americans in El Paso hoped they would burn away the violence in India. The fire was part of an offering going up to God along with prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives on their native soil. Wood was tossed in the fire in hopes of getting rid of evil spirits.

"The people who lost their lives in Mumbai, India, we want that it should not escalate and become worse," said Ramaswami Kalamegham, a member of the temple.

So with love in mind, members of the temple gathered for a special prayer session called Vishwa Shanti Havan, meaning all pervasive peace. Peace and healing is what India could use right now after terrorist attacked people in 10 places across Mumbai, leaving 174 people dead, and more than 230 injured.

"Whenever you have these kinds of attacks, we have people they want to attack,” said Vivek Tandon, a University of Texas El Paso associate professor who attended the prayer. “So we're just kind of cooling ourselves."

Tension brews in India as authorities said the terrorist are a Pakistani militant group. Pakistani officials said they have nothing to do with the attacks and are vowing to support India, but some Indians think otherwise.

Here in El Paso, they will pray for no more bullets, no more fighting and no more bloodshed.

"This offering is prayer to the Lord asking for his blessing to bestow on us a peaceful nature," said Kalamegham.
