Icy roads cause closures

The icy roads caused multiple accidents on I-10, which led to several closures on Thursday night.

One major closure occurred at the Cotton exit in Central El Paso after an officer was hit by a car. According to an El Paso police sergeant at the scene, the officer involved was on the freeway eastbound lanes responding to an accident when a car could not brake on time and hit another car, which in turn hit the officer.

The officer was transported to University Medical Center, and he is expected to be recover without any severe injuries.

Another accident that caused major delays occurred near the Executive exit going westbound after a driver lost control.

El Paso drivers at a nearby Valero gas station said they were concerned with the lack of caution observed by local drivers during the severe weather conditions.

"People need to learn to slow down. And don't [need to] press on the gas too fast or on the brake --especially in weather like this... you're going to slide. You're going to cause more accidents. If you take your time you can get to where you're going," said Donald Dodson.

Despite multiple accidents, which caused road closures no deaths were reported.
