EL PASO, Texas —
"This area is growing so much. Not so much residential but there's businesses in the area. So it merits it, it's time," said Blanca Del Valle, spokeswoman for TxDOT's El Paso district.
It's a project that's been in the works for the past 10 years, and in just one year, it will be a reality.
Del Valle said, "What we're doing is widening, adding another lane." Del Valle said. "Now we have three lanes. Once the project is completed, we'll have four lanes."
The Texas Department of Transportation is widening I-10 between Viscount and Zaragoza Road. But the project isn't without some compromises. To make the expansion possible, lane widths on the interstate will be reduced, and the inside shoulder will be no more.
"El Paso, we're used to having our shoulders, left and right. And a lot of people are not used to having that one shoulder, and they depend on that in case they have a flat tire or something," said Del Valle.
"We need that because there is some older vehicles. Even new vehicles break down sometimes," said Chris Flores, an El Paso driver.
Wednesday night, TxDOT held a public meeting to hear concerns. Blanca Del Valle says about 15 people showed up, and only one was against the project. Dennis Ramos has been commuting on I-10 for two years.
"I mean, I'm taking the border highway all the time, and especially when I'm going home, I'm taking that home. I'm thinking making it a little bit wider would be a lot nicer," said Ramos.
But he believes widening it may attract even more drivers to that route, causing more of an issue.
Ramos added, "Doing something like that, it's still gonna get congested. El Paso's starting to get really congested so, it is what it is, right?
