EL PASO, Texas —

The Texas Healthcare Association is posting warnings about a proposed 33 percent budget cut for Medicaid. Pete Natal, the administrator of the El Paso Health and Rehab Center, is looking at drastic ways to deal with the cuts. Natal’s biggest concerns are having to layoff staff members, and having to shut the nursing home down.

Natal said 80 percent of the people that call this facility home are dependent on Medicaid. He said if Medicaid suffers drastic cuts, nursing homes won’t be able to take new residents in.

“If we can’t take them in the nursing home, they’re going to go to the hospital,” warns Natal. “They’re going to flood the hospitals and that’s just going to be a mess.”

Charlie Ramirez visits his grandmother at the El Paso Health and Rehab Center twice a week. He’s heard about the proposed cuts and he’s angry.

“Why do they want to take benefits away from people such as her?” asked Ramirez. “She’s my grandmother, but we all have a grandmother.”

The only state representative from El Paso that voted for the proposed budget was Dee Margo. Margo told KFOX14 nursing homes will no longer take a cut because of a new Senate Bill 1811. State Rep. Joe Pickett told KFOX14 that Medicaid and nursing homes are still facing drastic cuts, although it might not be an entire 33 percent.
