SANTA TERESA, N.M. —

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized several bundles of exotic snake skins and snake-skin wallets hidden in the center console of a vehicle attempting to enter the country, officials said.

On Sept. 28, a 2009 GMC was entering the Santa Teresa port of entry. When officers asked if the driver was carrying any goods, the driver said no. The vehicle was sent to a secondary inspection and the driver again denied carrying any sort of goods.

After the inspection, officers found 332 python skins, six python-skin wallets and five armadillo-skin wallets hidden in the center console of the vehicle.

The driver was given a $500 penalty for failure to declare goods. The seized items were turned over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"CBP officers enforce hundreds of laws for dozens of federal agencies, including Fish and Wildlife," said Joanne Thale-Lembo, CBP Santa Teresa port director. "This incident was a clear case of someone trying to circumvent laws intended to protect wildlife."
