Humane Society Speaking Out Against Animal Shelter

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley is already burdened with an overpopulation of pets, but now it can add another problem to the list.

Frank Bryce, the president for the Humane Society of Southern New Mexico, said the shelter has a big rodent infestation problem in a trailer often used to house quarantined animals. Bryce said his proof come from pictures taken by a former shelter worker a few weeks ago.

“Right now, that building is probably one of the biggest sources of the transfer or transmission of disease to the primary building,” said Bryce.

In order to get answers, KFOX went straight to Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock, who is the director of the ASCMV. She admits there's a rodent problem in that trailer, but the shelter is working to fix it as quickly as possible.

“There's going to be, in the next week or so, a full-blown extermination of the building, and we'll have it back under control,” said Vesco-Mock. KFOX news reporter Phil Anaya even got a tour of the trailer in question.

“There's a little feces right here (trailer entrance) even, it’s really hard to have it perfect,” said Vesco-Mock, giving a tour. Even if the problem is fixed, Bryce said he wants one thing.

“A total investigation and review of what's going on out there,” he said.

“We're not denying that there's a problem and, you know, to work together to solve the animal problem of Dona Ana County, we don't need to be sneaking behind everyone’s back and accusing people of things, we need to be working together,” said Vesco-Mock.
