Houchen Community Day Care to remain open

A South El Paso nonprofit day care will be back open on Monday after a false closing announcement on Friday.

EL PASO, Texas —

Parents and board members of the Houchen Community Center heard good news Saturday.

The day care the center it operates will remain open.

"I want to let them know that we will be open Monday, and the board will be reviewing whatever happened yesterday," said Cheryll Felder, the community center's board president.

It was a much different story on Friday.

The day care's executive director, Miriam Maldonado, without any notice, said it was closing.

Parents and children were confused.

"It was very distressing," parent Alex Neill said.

The closure could have left some 13 staffers without a job, and close to 70 kids without a place to go to after school.

But the center's board president tells KFOX14 she never knew about the closing, and says the executive director has no power to do such a thing. She said that it must be a board decision.

"It has to be 51 percent of our membership,” Felder said.

The reason for the attempted closure we're told is due to a lack of funds.

Parents said they never knew that was an issue and had they known, they would have held fundraisers like in the past.
