Abandoned horses show signs of starvation and dehydration

By Veronica Macias

ANTHONTY, N.M. —

Neighbors in Anthony, N.M., said a pair of horses were allegedly abandoned by their owner after the couple split.

The horses are visible to drivers off of McNutt Road and several neighbors in the area have cooperated to help feed the animals. Cynthia Rutledge said she has desperately tried to get help for the starving horses from animal control.

"Why haven't you guys (Dona Ana Animal Control) done anything within the last eight months? You know we've been trying to get help for these poor horses," said Rutledge.

Animal control has gone out there but told KFOX14 News that this case is out of their jurisdiction until neighbors file a complaint with New Mexico's Farm and Live Stock Bureau. Then the NMFLSB can turn over the case.

Yet neighbors fear that time is running out for the two horses and no one is able to take both in.

"The older one is really getting bad because, like I said, it's sacrificing it's feed to feed the little one. And the little one, it still doesn't look good but it looks better than the older one," said Rutledge.

As for the couple who owns the horses, Rutledge claims they have not been seen and do not own the property where the horse are located.
