Hometown Fighters Put Spotlight On El Paso

EL PASO, Texas —

Fight night puts El Paso back in the national spotlight and pit hometown boys Antonio Escalante and Miguel "Mickey" Roman against each other in the ring Friday.

With some last minute preparations the gates opened, the lights started flashing and the bell started to ring. Fans eagerly awaited the main event to see who is king of the border, Miguel "Mickey" Roman from Juarez or El Pasoan Antonio Escalante.

"I think you'll see a mixture both of them will have a show of support," said Roman and Escalante fan Eddie Sanchez.

Hours before the fight Escalante walked into the Don Haskins Center with a smile on his face aleady planning his victory celebration.

"Feeling great, feeling like a champion, ready to fight and go celebrate a victory," said Escalante.

With most people saying that the two are equal, they were ready for the punches to start flying.

"I expect it to be a candidate for fight of the year. Some people think this is just a local thing but alot of people around the world will be watching," said Sanchez.

He was absolutley right. ESPN 2 is broadcasted the fight nationally and fans say that is just more of a reason to support El Pasoan Antonio Escalante.

"I think he's gonna be fighting for the title, well he should be anyway," said Eddie Mendez.

In the end Escalante defeated Roman by unanimous decision.
