EL PASO, Texas —
KFOX is continuing coverage on the allegations against a local shelter that helps pregnant woman. On Thursday, the Homeless Coalition was expected to vote on whether or not to remove Dame La Mano as a member, but the group decided to look deeper into the issue.
The issue surfaced in the media when Dame La Mano volunteers were seen collecting money at intersections. But this is just once criticism against the shelter; board members at the meeting said they have knowledge of other allegations.
A month ago, the 40 members of the Homeless Coalition were asked to research Dame La Mano and decide whether to expel the shelter from the coalition.
"I've been speaking with several agencies regarding the allegations, the false allegations. I feel we have the support of a lot of agencies. Let's get the facts and not only just point fingers," said David Arellano, who runs the shelter with his sister Rosa Cabrera.
The main concern has to do with Dame La Mano's method of raising funds. Dame La Mano officials said they have a permit from the city and the people collecting money are volunteers from the shelter. But KFOX interviewed a pregnant resident of the shelter that told us she would be keeping half of whatever she collected that day.
"The only issue I have as a board member is the panhandling," said Michael Flores, a Board Member of the Coalition.
Other allegations were not disclosed to KFOX, but during the meeting some members mentioned allegation that shelter staff is not treating people with respect and dignity. Members didn't vote on removing the shelter instead they voted to look into the coalition's rules.
"The membership decided that we needed to strength our bylaws and what it entails to be a member or a non-member, how can we take a member out of the coalition," said Flores.
The next Homeless Coalition Meeting will take place next month.
