Homeland Security investigates cancellation

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

An investigation by the Department of Homeland Security is linked to the cancellation of the boxing match between Julio Cesar Chavez and Andy Lee at UTEP's Sunbowl.

An anonymous source told our media partner the El Paso Times that an "assessment report" was gathered by federal agents for large-crowd events at the venue but the report never gave a recommendation to cancel the event in June. El Pasoans say they are baffled at the idea that any Texas University official considers El Paso an unsafe city.

"The rest of the country sees El Paso as a danger city and I think they're very wrong about that. It hurts the city's reputation. It is a safe city," said Garcia.

The unnamed source said the report was given to UTEP police as a precaution but that has not been confirmed by the university. UTEP also canceled an interview with KFOX-14 on Thursday.

There is speculation that the fight was called off because of a threat posed by the Sinaloa Cartel. Chavez is from Sinaloa. But some El Pasoans say they don't believe there is any threat of cartel violence spilling over into El Paso.

"Most of the cartel problem stays in Mexico and that's where the problem is at. And I definitely don't think it affects El Paso," said Garcia.

City leaders are still trying to make arrangements at another venue but most believe it will not be accomplished on time.
