Holloman Under Consideration For F-35A

Southern New Mexico's Holloman Air Force Base is one of five bases under consideration for training for the Air Force's new F-35A.

Robert Van Tassel of Science Applications International Corporation said the potential training mission would bring in pilots fresh out of flight school.

Van Tassel is helping with an environmental impact statement on the plane.

A Tuesday meeting in Alamogordo heard questions and concerns from communities near Holloman about the proposed training.

According to literature at the meeting, the Air Force proposes to establish F-35A Joint Strike Fighter training aircraft at one or more U.S. bases.

The F-35A is a multiple-role fighter but air-to-ground missions are its emphasis. It was designed to replace and supplement F-16 and A-10 aircraft.

Van Tassel said six F-35s current are being test-flown.
