Hit-and-run driver arrested in connection to first deadly pedestrian accident

EL PASO, Texas —

Deputies  said the driver who took off after hitting a worker who was cleaning up the roadway near Clint was arrested.  

Eduardo Rodriguez Mendoza, 41, was charged with the death of 33-year-old Christopher Self, said El Paso County sheriff's deputies.

On Jan. 11, deputies responded to a deadly hit-and-run accident on Gateway West, one mile west of the Clint exit.

There they found Self dead at the scene, according to deputies.

Self, who was employed by Xceed Resources, was picking up trash along the road.

Mendoza was arrested Monday evening and booked into the El Paso County Jail under a $20,000 bond.

Self's death was the first fatal pedestrian accident of the year for El Paso County.
