Historic Berino Church Demolished

Immaculate Conception Church in Berino was demolished Wednesday afternoon against the pleas of many parisioners.

The historic church was built in 1910 by many of the community.

The diocese of Las Cruces said the demolition was necessary after the chapels walls started to fail.

"It's a very sad day. This is not a day of rejoicing this is a day of loss," said Eliabeth Grinnel, Chancellor.

Although the chapel had not been used in several years, parisioners said they would have liked to have kept it standing or at least maintained some of the structure.

The diocese said they examined the option, but it was not possible.

The diocese of Las Cruces plans to build a new chuch but they have no set plans to do so as of now.
