EL PASO, Texas —

Wind gusts of up to 70 mph caused damage in northeast El Paso on Thursday.

Morgan Birdwell inspected the damage to his wife's car. It was parked next to their apartment at Alabama and Pierce streets as strong winds blew into the area. Bricks from the apartment building fell on top of the car, and it is now a total loss.

"I was like, 'Hey baby. It looks like you're going to get a new car,'" said Birdwell.

Birdwell was not sure whether the winds blew an object into the apartment building, causing the bricks to fall below, or the damage was caused by the force of the wind itself.

"We're just lucky nobody got hurt," said Birdwell. "Nobody was in the car."

On the gateway off U.S. 54, a shed was obstructing the road. The wind had blown the shed over the fence at Chapin High School.

On Vicksburg Street, the sounds of chainsaws cut through the roar of the wind. A tree in Roman Leon's front yard had split into four. Its massive branches obstructed the front door and damaged the roof.

"It landed on the trucks," said Leon. "So we're waiting to see until the insurance comes here."

Meanwhile, his brother-in-law and nephews helped him cut the tree into movable pieces so they could enter the home without an branches falling on top of them.

Like Birdwell, Leon said he's just grateful that no one was hurt.
