High Gasoline Prices Affect Small Businesses

EL PASO, Texas —

The unrest in the Middle East has traders booking "a fear premium" of $15 to $20 a barrel to account for further disruptions in oil shipments. In turn, that could be hurting the consumer and small businesseses.

"Florists get flowers from all over the world. Starting from where we get our flowers from, airline, gas is more expensive, so our shipments are more expensive for flowers," said Debbie's Bloomers manager Marisa Guerrero.

Guerrero said she has been taking the hit for the last couple of weeks as her recent shipments have cost her store more than the average.

"We get extra charges when we get our flowers shipped to us, just that little bit, I know a lot of businesses are trying not to send that on to the consumer but at the same time they have to stay in businesses," said Guerrero.

According to the Associated Press, oil prices are stabilizing but still high. They dropped below $97 a barrel just days after spiking above $100. Crude oil dropped on reports that Lybia is still exporting oil. But we're still seeing a significant rise at the pump. Regular gasoline is at $3.35 in some places around town. That's another cost for Debbie's Bloomers.

"But then of course, locally, our delivery drivers have to pay more for their gasoline for their vehicles, so it affects us that way as well," said Guerrero.

For now, Guerrero said they're not passing on the cost to their clients, but she knows tougher times are up ahead.

"We're keeping our fingers crossed that they won't go up much more, but it may come to that point," said Guerrero.
