Hatch Arroyo Breaks Again

Related

August 29, 2006 —

Early Tuesday morning around 1 a.m., officials in Hatch, N.M. said the Placitas Arroyo breached for the second time in just over one week. As KFOX reported, the arroyo burst on Monday, August 21, causing devastation throughout the community.

Hatch Police Chief Danny Ross told KFOX the neighborhood west of the arroyo flooded, and about six families were evacuated because rushing water was blocking access to their homes. Those people went to stay with relatives.

Officials said crews had drudged the arroyo deeper during the clean-up process last week, so that the overnight rain did not cause as much of an impact as it could have.

Mayor Judd Nordyke told KFOX crews waited until sunrise to begin surveying this latest damage.

Highways 185, 187, and 154 were closed in Hatch due to floodwater.

According to New Mexico State Police, NMSP officers, along with Border Patrol agents, the State Highway Department and Motor Transportation Division officers were heading to Hatch to provide needed assistance.
