EL PASO, Texas —

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized 1,306 pounds of marijuana and 7.7 pounds of cocaine during 14 seizures this week, officials said.

The largest seizure occurred Tuesday night when officers stopped a New Mexico man trying to smuggled 549 pounds of drugs, officials said.

"This is a significant seizure and a substantial loss for the smuggler," said Hector Mancha, CBP's El Paso port director. "Rarely do we see 500 pound loads of marijuana in passenger vehicles. The hard work of CBP officers stopped this smuggler and 13 others in their tracks this week."

Just before 10 p.m. Tuesday night at the Paso Del Norte international crossing, a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche attempted to cross from Mexico. A CBP officer noticed several issues when he was interviewing the driver, so the vehicle was selected for a secondary exam, officials said.

A drug-sniffing dog searched the vehicle and alerted officers to the presence of drugs. Hidden compartments in the quarter panels, floor and bed of the vehicle were discovered by officers, and they removed 287 bundles from the truck, officials said.

Nicholas Castaneda of Mesilla Park, N.M., was arrested and is being held at the El Paso County Jail without bail.
