Commissioner Dan Haggerty cleared in new public corruption indictment

It's been a rough couple of months for county commissioner Dan Haggerty, fighting bladder cancer the same time he became tangled up in a federal indictment for public corruption, but now it looks as though the commissioner may be in the clear.

"I don't know what mental anguish is, but whatever it was I think I went through it," Haggerty said.

Haggerty said he received a call from the FBI the day after he was diagnosed with cancer, notifying him about the 11-page indictment and tying him to former County Judge Anthony Cobos accused of mail fraud and bribery. The indictment alluded Haggerty had accepted a bribe of money and Final Four basketball tickets.

In a press conference late Thursday afternoon Haggerty said the alleged bribe was a company that invited all of its clients to its suite at the game, but Haggerty wasn't invited because he was attending a wedding in Rome, Italy.

The new indictment released Thursday at 9:15a.m. trumps the old indictment. It's only 3 pages long and now names Cobos, but no one else.

"It's just so sad, this is the FBI, the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Haggerty said. "There has been no investigation, none of what they said had any truth to it."

Haggerty also said his political future is dead and feels he may never be able to run for public office again, but feels relieved to clear his family name and has hope for his other battle.

"There may not be a cure for cancer but this has made a huge difference in my diagnosis," Haggerty said.
