EL PASO, Texas —

A military couple who is overseas left both their children with temporary guardians, who allegedly killed the daughter and left the son seriously injured, police said.

According to the El Paso Police Department an investigation revealed a 2-year-old girl died from injuries due to physical abuse and her 4-year-old brother also has serious injuries from abuse.

The parents of both children were stationed overseas in Germany and Iraq and left their children in the care of Staff Sgt. Nakia J. Dawkins, 32, and his wife Mrs. Shawntrell Dawkins, 29.

Detectives arrested the Dawkinses Monday night and charged both with one count of capital murder and one count of injury to a child.

Fort Bliss Criminal Investigators are assisting the El Paso Police Department in this case.
