EL PASO, Texas —
Cases have been solved and arrests have been made. People in the community said they see graffiti everywhere.
"It's gross and dumb," said Sonia Methola from Far East El Paso.
Minerva Mendoza from Far East El Paso said she's seen it in her neighborhood.
"It upsets me. It's all over the place and it doesn't seem like anything is being done about it," said Mendoza.
The El Paso police department wants to crack down on graffiti. Forty-seven people have been arrested in one month.
"We've received many complaints from the public. That's part of the reason why the department added five additional officers to try to combat this," said Javier Sambrano the El Paso Police spokesman.
Kevin Barnes, 20, is just one of the dozens of people arrested for tagging. He's accused of tagging four different locations totalling the damages to $4,650. He now faces a first-degree felony.
"The message we're trying to send is if you're doing graffiti in our city you're going to get caught and arrested," said Sambrano.
Now, the gang unit has resolved 42 graffiti cases, but some people said they haven't seen the difference.
"It might be a bigger problem. I still see it, its been there for a while," said Mendoza.
Police officials said it's important that graffiti gets reported right away.
"It makes us look very ghetto," said Methola.
