Good Samaritan Gets Citation After Helping Bleeding Woman

EL PASO, Texas —

A Socorro man said a woman collapsed in front of his car at a red light, but he says he ends up getting a ticket for his good deed.

"I think it's very unfair for being a good samaritan, I got cited," said Bruce Salais.

Salais said he had to help the Ysleta High School teacher who collapsed in front of his car as she tried to cross the street. Her blood stains are still on the ground at the corner of Alameda and Davis.

"I got off to help this lady to get up. The bus driver behind me, I don't know what his problem was, he started telling me with his hands to get out of the way," said Salais.

After helping the woman up, Bruce says he hopped in his SUV to move when he saw the Sun Metro bus trying to squeeze in between his vehicle and the other cars on the next lane.

"My door wasn't completely open, it was about like this and my leg was right there. The bus hit my door and took the panel off, totally disregarding my safety," said Salais.

When police showed up, the officer cited him. The citation is for open door on roadway.

"When officers came, they didn't hear my story. They just asked me if my door was open and it was my fault. I think that is very unfair," said Salais.

Salais said as far as he knows, the city bus driver was not cited. He said if the driver would have only been patient, they wouldn't be in this situation. But he said if anybody should have received the citation, it should have been the bus driver.

"She just said, if I had my door open that it was going to be my fault. Now, my vehicle is damaged, I helped out a teacher from Ysleta High School and I'm the one paying for it," said Salais.

KFOX put in a call to police to get their perspective. KFOX also called Sun Metro to find out if they're looking into the case.
