Gadsden Middle School Students Could Soon Require Uniform

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

More than a hundred community members crowded Gadsden Middle School on Monday to hear the principal discuss a plan to implement a school uniform.

The meeting was held before a group of school board members after Gadsden Middle School principal Dr. David Garcia requested special consideration from them to implement a school uniform, rather than following the traditional process that would take approximately one year.

"Because of the seriousness of the gang problem in Anthony and all the attention it's brought the community, I feel we have a serious problem," said Garcia. "We need all law enforcement and the schools to address it immediately," he said.

Parents and concerned community members voiced opinions on the need for a school uniform. However, Garcia found out just before the meeting commenced that the state statue will not allow a shortcut in the process.

The school board will now conduct a survey from parents to let them decide whether a uniform should be imposed.
