LAS CRUCES, N.M. —
The halls were a little quieter today at Onate High School. Friends of Keian Padilla, the teen killed in Wednesday's Highway 70 wreck, mourned his loss.
"It hit everybody hard cause they were close to him," said Brianna Aranda, a student and friend of Keian Padilla.
Students at Onate High School dressed in black today to honor their friend and fellow classmate's life.
"School's all loud and now it's all quiet. Cause everybody's sad at what happened. I just feel so sorry about his family and all that. I just pray to God he's resting in peace, him and his mother," said Daniel Fierro, another close friend.
Fifteen-year-old Keian Padilla and his mother, Marcia Parra were driving eastbound along U.S. Highway 70 yesterday morning. Police say 21-year-old Shauna Halladay, who was driving westbound, crossed the center median, hitting the car Keian was in. He and his mother died at the scene.
Daniel Fierro, one of Keian's good friend's, remembers asking Padilla his plans for Halloween.
"He said he wanted to spend time with his girlfriend. And that's the last words he told me about so that's kind of hurting me right now," said Fierro.
Brianna Aranda has known Padilla since the sixth grade and says he was liked by everybody.
"He was, outgoing. He was really funny. He was really nice and respectful," said Aranda.
"It's a shame that his talent had to go to waste like that. He was so young, he could have done so much in his life. He didn't get to experience that," said Fierro.
Authorities say it could take weeks to figure out what led to the crash.
The driver of the car that hit Padilla and his mother is in stable condition at University Medical Center.
