Fresh Reservoirs Concern For City

June 27, 2006 —

Janice Carpio, KFOX News at Nine

Some reservoirs that were once empty have formed into the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes because of the recent rains. So far no West Nile has been reported this year but health officials aren't taking their chances. Vector Control has already sprayed down this fresh reservoir. They say a body of water like it could house millions of eggs.

Around this time last year, the first human case of West Nile for the season was reported, but there were less than the year before. "We pretty much stay busy all year round now, now we're doing protective measures throughout the winter," said Vector Controls Mario Sandoval. He said they've sprayed down the city's storm drains and sewer lines.

Those measures may be why we're actually seeing less of the West Nile virus. In 2004, there were 30 cases of West Nile confirmed, out of those there were five deaths. In 2006, there were 12 cases confirmed with only two deaths.

As one virus is under control, another named Dengy is becoming a concern.

Vector Control said swimming pools are the biggest problem outside of reservoirs. They say have enough chemicals in your pool to get rid of any the chance for larva. They also add to empty out containers and old tires.
