Freeway, Street, And Foot Pursuit Ends In Accident

What ended as a car crash after a police pursuit Thursday afternoon began on the 500 block of Thunderbird as a carjacking. Police said there at gunpoint, 29-year old Jose Ramon Zamora III carjacked a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. Officers got on their radio and gave a vehicle description. That vehicle was found just minutes later.

"A motorcycle officer working the freeway along the area of Schuster spotted that vehicle, initiated a pursuit along with another marked unit to try and stop that vehicle," said Javier Sambrano with the El Paso Police Department.

Zamora did not pull over.

"The driver of the truck ended up at that point going across all lanes of traffic of I-10 East, exiting on the Dallas," said Sambrano.

Police said once he exited Dallas, Zamora took a right hand turn on Wyoming, and side swiped an elderly man in a Honda CRV. That's when the suspect lost control.

"I heard like a loud crash, but I thought it was just somebody going over a bump...I just saw all the wreckage and more cop cars just showing up, it was just chaos," said Clayton Byrd from West El Paso.

Police were able to take Zamora down after a short foot pursuit. Witnesses KFOX spoke with said they haven't seen a police presence like this in a long time, and they knew it was something serious.

"There's a lot of cops here, I've never seen so many cops in one area in El Paso before," said Byrd.

The large police presence meant a large perimeter, creating a traffic mess.

"My uncle is on his way to come get me, and he had to go a couple more blocks down instead of just turning on this street because everything is just blocked off," said Byrd.

Police defended their actions.

"Definitely this individual was a danger to the public by the way that he was driving, that was why the officers pursued," said Sambrano.

El Paso police said amazingly only one person was injured in this whole ordeal. The elderly man in the Honda CRV was taken to Sierra Medical Center, but was not seriously hurt.

Zamora will be charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault, because police say he threatened another person with a weapon earlier in the day, along with evading arrest.
