Fort Bliss soldiers in deadly shootings ID'd

EL PASO, Texas —

Police investigators released more information about the gruesome events before two soldiers where shot, killed in Monday's shootings.

Police said a Fort Bliss soldier, 41-year-old James Steadman, showed up at the residence on the 3700 block of Coco Palm around 6:42 a.m. and shot 44-year-old Kelvin Gooding once in the face. After injuring Kelvin Gooding, Steadman went upstairs and fired several gunshots at 39-year-old Fort Bliss soldier Lykisha Gooding. She died at the scene.

A young child who was home when the shootings happened was able to escape safely, according to police.

When Steadman tried leaving the Gooding home he was confronted by an injured Kelvin Gooding who was armed with a gun. Gunfire was exchanged between the two. Police said Steadman was injured in the upper thigh by a gunshot wound.

When police arrived they found Kelvin Gooding and had him taken to a hospital.

Steadman left their home and headed toward northeast El Paso where a second shooting was reported at 8:34 a.m.

Police said when Steadman arrived at an apartment complex on the 8900 block of Kenneth Street he got into a fight with an unidentified female that resulted in him getting shot.

Steadman died from a gunshot wound that was fired at the apartment.

Police said they were able recover a weapon believed to have been used in the shootings.

An investigation into these two shootings is ongoing.
