Fort Bliss Soldier Meets Son For First Time

EL PASO, Texas —

A Fort Bliss soldier gets his Christmas gift a little late, but it’s much more than he could have asked for.

Many soldiers often go months or even a year before they get a chance to meet their newborn, but thanks to coordination from Fort Bliss and Del Sol Medical Center, one soldier met his son right after birth.

Trevor Spencer, a Fort Bliss soldier, is currently fighting in Iraq.

"He got to hear the baby cry and I know that meant a lot to him,” said Crystal Spencer, Trevor’s wife.

Though unable to be here for the delivery of his second son, Tristan Michael, he was still there for his wife, Crystal, calling her first on the phone through labor.

"It was very touching because he told her I’m sorry I can't be there. I’m so sorry I couldn't be with you,” said Carol Bautista from OBGYN at Del Sol Medical Center.

"Even though he wasn't there physically, I could hear him and that meant a lot,” Crystal said.

A day after baby Tristan was born, Trevor saw his son through a video conference.

"He does have your nose and he has your dimples and your eyebrows,” Bautista said as she looked at baby Tristan.

It’s the first time Del Sol Medical Center ever set up a video conference for this kind of event.

"This is just amazing that we can watch from Iraq to El Paso and bring them together and let them share their babies for the first few hours together,” Bautista said.

"He eats a lot, just like you," Crystal said.

"It’s just really great that he gets to see the baby right away. I just hope more Army wives can do this. I know some who they don't see their baby till a year later, till their baby is almost a year old."

Crystal also tells KFOX if it weren't for the video conference, Trevor would have had to wait to see his baby until April.
