She's the first female in the Army to hold a highly coveted and selective position.

She also happens to be stationed at Fort Bliss.

"You know, I think you're the first female maneuver Brigade S-3 there's ever been. He kind of looked at me and I said...OK," said Maj. Sonja Dyer.

Those were the words uttered a couple months ago by Major General Dana Pittard, commanding general at Fort Bliss.

They were said to Maj. Sonja Dyer.

"It's my responsibility that all 2,900 people are well-trained and ready to fight," said Dyer.

She is the first female to hold the combat brigade operations officer title across the entire Army. She's held the position since September of 2012.

Her main job is to make sure everything is coordinated and synchronized within the brigade.

"To me, it's a job. You know, I went in and did the job. I went in from a Battalion S-3 and the next logical step is a brigade S-3," said Dyer.

Modesty is definitely a quality Maj. Dyer possesses. But that's not to say she isn't proud.

"It's a good feeling to breach that line, it's a good feeling to know that females are making those passes especially with the just announcement of women in combat. I think it's silly to me when I hear that. I see it on the news -- should we allow females in combat? Well I've been to combat twice, either that or I don't know what combat is because I've already done that twice," said Dyer.

She said the Army has come a long way in breaking down barriers and offers some advice.

"Don't let a female standard stop you. Don't achieve that standard. Achieve the next standard. Achieve it higher than that and keep moving forward," said Dyer.
