Fort Bliss Remembers Fallen Soldiers

EL PASO, TX —

Wednesday, Fort Bliss honored three fallen soldiers who died supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom: Spc. Jason Koutroubas, Cpl. Brandon Smitherman and Capt. Timothy McGovern.

All of them died in October and were serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"You can’t say enough about the fortitude that these people have, knowingly going into harm’s way, " said Army Maj. Jerry Sheppard.

McGovern was 28 and from Idaville, Ind. He leaves behind his parents. His military metals include the Purple Heart and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Fellow soldiers remember him as a great leader who kept hope alive.

Smitherman was 21 and from Conroe, Tx. He is survived by his parents, sister and his fiancé. Smitherman’s military honors include the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal. He was remember by soldiers as one who put his life before others.

Koutroubas is from Dunnellon, Fla. He was 21 years old and is survived by his parents, wife and daughter. Soldiers who spoke about him at the memorial service say he made corny jokes and enjoyed making funny faces with his daughter.

Fort Bliss’s 4th Brigade Combat Team has lost 31 soldiers in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
