FORT BLISS, Texas —
Fort Bliss officials gathered to discuss what measures to take to prepare for the possibility of severe budget cuts.
It comes just two days after the Department of Defense called on all military installations to make immediate plans to reduce expenditures.
"(We will) identify ways that we can reduce spending without impacting our soldiers, family members, certainly our warriors," said Maj. Joseph Buccino, spokesperson for Fort Bliss.
All without risking preparation for combat.
Fort Bliss says training on the post will most likely be combined and reduced.
"Training for units scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan will not be impacted. That will not be touched," said Buccino.
Here is what's currently in effect across the board for all branches of the military: a civilian hiring freeze and cancellation of temporary contracts.
Fort Bliss officials said they are looking to make cuts that are reversible, so once a budget is decided, further expansions on post can be made.
The plans are in their very initial phases, so no specific goals have been pinpointed.
However, there is no immediate impact to the full-time civilian workforce of 11,000 at Fort Bliss.
"We feel that we can get this done without significantly impacting the quality of life of our families, of soldiers, or our civilian work force. And our civilian work force is extremely important to us here on Fort Bliss," said Buccino.
Sources within the Department of Defense indicate that in the event of a continuing resolution, all major military institutions could face up to 35 percent cuts of 2013's expenditures.
The cuts are set to take place in early March.
