LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A former Las Cruces basketball coach was indicted on child pornography charges Wednesday, according to U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales and Acting Special Agent in Charge Dennis A. Ulrich, II, Homeland Security Investigations.

Erik Bilal Khan, 32, is charged with distributing, receiving and possessing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit activity. The distribution and reception charges carry a maximum penalty of five to 20 years in jail while the possession charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Khan was a coach at Picacho Middle School and volunteer at Mayfield High School. He told police, according to an arrest affidavit, he is able to limit his attraction to young boys by viewing pornographic images of the children being sexually abused.

According to the indictment, Khan allegedly distributed child porn in April, received some in February and possessed child pornographybetween February 2010 and May 2012.

The indictment stated that one video depicted a prepubescent boy whose hands and feet were bound behind his back while he administered oral sex to an adult male.

Khan was under investigation since September 2011 when authorities discovered that his IP address was used to distribute, receive and possess child pornography, officials said.

On May 9, a search warrant was executed and hard drives containing hundreds of images and videos of child pornography were seized, officials said.

Khan has been in federal custody since his arrest May 30.

According to the arrest affidavit, Khan told detectives he became addicted to child porn while working as a counselor for juvenile sex offenders in Mesa, Ariz., where, in that professional capacity, he viewed child porn.

He claims he was never sexually involved with any young boys but said some of the boys made sexual advances toward him, according to the affidavit.

Neighbors previously told KFOX14 that Khan only recently moved to the neighborhood and believe he knew detectives were looking for him.

"I'm very nervous, and I'm appalled at the fact that this could be going on under our noses, basically. Everyone around here has children. I believe everyone on this block has children, and it's scary to know that that is happening," a neighbor who didn't want to be identified said.
