EL PASO, Texas —

A former Irvin High School dance teacher accused of having child pornography was denied bail, according to court records.

Federal Judge Kathleen Cardone denied the request made by Marco Alferez's attorney on June 24.

Alferez was charged with sexual exploitation of children, receipt of child pornography, distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Alferez began teaching dance classes at Irvin High School in August 2008 and has been a choreographer for VIVA! El Paso, a summer musical performance at McKelligon Canyon.

According to the our news partners the El Paso Times, Alferez's family last week hired a new attorney, Michael Gibson, who has also requested that Alferez's August trial date be postponed. Cardone has yet to rule on that request.
