Former EPISD Trustee Behind Bars

EL PASO, Texas —

Sal Mena was the latest El Paso Independent School District trustee to be implicated in an FBI corruption scandal.

Friday, the board president and teachers told KFOX they were surprised and saddened.

"An indictment is not a judgment of guilt, and while we are disappointed that anyone connected with the school district has even been indicted, I want to remind people that an indictment is not a judgment of guilt," said board president David Dodge.

Friday, the FBI arrested Mena. He is being charged on an eight-count indictment, including charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and lying to get a loan. According to the U.S. attorney, Mena set up a fake consulting contract and received money without providing any services. He also allegedly took cash bribes in exchange for his vote. Teachers at an EPISD pep rally were unsettled by the news.

"I'm surprised to hear that. It makes me sad that this is happening, but it doesn't mean that he is guilty. He hasn't been proven guilty. It might hurt teacher morale a little bit, but we won't let it affect the students at all," one teacher said.

This is the third EPISD school board trustee to be caught up in a corruption scandal, but the district said it hopes it is the last.

"It is very sad when anyone breaks the public's trust. These two trustees are only two of many others. This is a solid board," Dodge said.

Mena served four terms with the board totaling more than 16 years. He retired nearly a year ago.
