EL PASO, Texas —
The former mayor of El Paso accused City Council of making decisions without voter approval, which is something one blogger says the former mayor has done in the past.
Ray Salazar is against the demolition of City Hall to make way for the new Triple-A baseball stadium saying this should be in the hands of voters.
Blogger Brad Kanus dug up old articles from the El Paso Times and accuses Salazar of pursing an action to build City Hall where it currently stands rather than where it was originally planned to go.
Kanus attacked Salazar's decision from the 1970s to switch the location of City Hall. It was originally planned to go near the county building but he decided, and the council at the time voted, that it was best for City Hall to go near the Civic Center. The municipal building was part of a multimillion dollar project to lift a dying downtown.
Salazar said there is no comparison to the ballpark deal because he faced no opposition. Salazar said despite being scrutinized about the purchase where City Hall currently sits, he was found of doing nothing illegal.
"It's completely different. We never created a conspiracy; they have," Salazar said. "This thing has been going on for two years. They had to find somebody that wanted to build something that would give them the opportunity to tear down City Hall."
In the newspaper articles in question, Salazar defended the switch in the past. His plan also aimed at revitalizing downtown. The council hoped hotels and major department store chains would follow.
"There was a piece of land that was available," Salazar said. "We all voted and we decided to build it there. There was no opposition."
City Hall is expected to be demolished in spring 2013, with the stadium scheduled to be completed by spring 2014.
