Former Bowie HS assistant principal resigns a week after being placed on administrative leave

By Jesse Martinez

EL PASO, Texas —

Former Bowie High School Assistant Principal Johnnie Vega has resigned from the district after being placed on administrative leave last week, district officials said.

El Paso Independent School District Interim Superintendent Vernon Butler said Vega was placed on leave pending further review for possible violations of the State Educators' Code of Conduct.

Along with Vega, a district administrator, Anna Luisa Kell, and counselor, Felipe Cobos, were placed on administrative leave last week.

"The El Paso Independent School District is continuing to move forward with corrective actions against individuals who failed to uphold their obligation to provide our students with a high quality education, and as Interim Superintendent, I will continue to hold all employees accountable," Butler said.

Butler said Vega resigned effective Thursday and will retire.

Vega's resignation comes a few weeks after former principal Jesus Chavez resigned from the district. Chavez was reassigned from his position as principal at Bowie High School to the district's central office in April.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Chavez was ousted as principal of Bowie in April because he was accused of taking part in the standardized test- rigging scandal that has plagued the district.

In October, Chavez spoke to the Board of Trustees about his removal as principal, and he was denied his grievance. It was voted unanimously that Chavez would not get his job back, nor would he be reassigned anywhere within the district.
