LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A former Las Cruces basketball coach previously arrested on child pornography charges is facing new accusations that he illegally performed physical exams on juvenile student athletes, police said.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Erik Bilal Khan was previously charged last year with distributing, receiving and possessing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit activity. At the time, the former Picacho Middle School coach and volunteer coach at Mayfield High School told police, according to an arrest affidavit, he was able to limit his attraction to young boys by viewing pornographic images of the children being sexually abused.

On Thursday, police said Khan, 33, was additionally charged with one count of criminal sexual contact of a minor and three felony counts of practicing medicine without a license.

Sometime before the 2007 basketball season, Khan allegedly performed physical examinations on Picacho Middle School athletes even though he was not licensed to do so in New Mexico, police said.

Police said he performed examinations on at least three students in a locker room at the school.

In May 2012, Khan was arrested on 15 felony counts of sexual exploitation of a child when he was suspected of downloading or sharing child pornography, police said. Investigators believed that from Sept. 9, 2011, to May 7, 2012, hundreds of illegals files may have been stored or downloaded to Khan's computer.

When police executed the warrant in 2012, they found hundreds of child porn files on his computer, police said.

Las Cruces police investigators executed a search warrant on Khan's residence in 2012 where they discovered hundreds of computer files containing child pornography.

Police also believed that Khan spent his time years ago as a counselor for juvenile sex offenders in Mesa, Ariz.

He is currently being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

Those who have information on this case or believe to have been victimized are asked to call the Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Tips may also be sent via email to lcpdtips@las-cruces.org.
