Flu Making Its Way Into The Borderland

EL PASO, Texas —

Far West Texas communities should prepare themselves for what the Texas Department of State Health Services sees as a rise in "local activity" flu cases in Texas.

According to the department, each of the other states reported little to no flu activity in their most recent Influenza Surveillance Report.

The Centers for Disease Control characterized "local activity" as outbreaks of influenza or increases in influenza-like illness cases and recent laboratory-confirmed influenza in a single region of the state.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 11 health service regions in Texas, including far West Texas, reported flu activity and also stated influenza-like illnesses in the El Paso area rose statewide over the past week.

Officials said it is very important to receive immunization shots. More vaccine shots were made available to Immunize El Paso, which will extend their flu vaccination campaign beyond Nov. 4th.

The cost of the flu vaccine is $25 for adults and $10 for children. Medicare, Children's Medicaid, CHIP and some private insurances will be accepted.

Vaccinations will be administered daily at these locations: Tillman Clinic located at 222 S. Campbell, from 9-5 Eastside Immunization Clinic, 1580 George Dieter from 8-5.
