First West Nile Death

August 25, 2001 —

This is first death associated with West Nile Virus this year and Health officials say they're noticing the cases are popping up all over town and not just in the county areas.

Kimberly Gomez- East El Paso, "I am surprised but then again the mosquito population with all the rain lately I'm not surprised because there's so much standing water. It's been raining so much all over the city, there's going to be more mosquitoes."

The health department confirmed more human cases today. On Tuesday, a 73-year old Lower Valley woman passed away from the West Nile Virus. And last week a 62 year old woman from the lower valley was hospitalized.

The city/county health director Dr. Jorge Magana says the wet weather is helping mosquitoes populate and at the same time hampering efforts to get rid of them.

Dr. Jorge Magana- Health Department, "We still have traps set all over the area..."

Those traps help the health department staff determine where mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus are breeding.

West Nile mosquitoes have been found in East El Paso and the San Elizario Area. Human cases of West Nile have appeared in parts like West El Paso, the Lower Valley and East El Paso.

Dr. Magana says mosquitoes are moving to different areas than previous years.

Magana, "That is dependent on the migratory birds, they'll do one path one year and other path another year."

This has people from other parts of town worried about something they really didn't think about before.

Marilyn Sanchez- East El Paso, "Just thinking they could bite you as a matter of fact I've been bit by so many."

The Health Department has also discovered mosquitoes with Western Equine Encephalitis.

That virus affects mostly horses. Most recently mosquitoes infected with Western Equine Encephalitis were found in Canutillo. Other areas include Fabens, San Elizario and Feather Lake on North Loop.
