First Look: El Paso's new downtown baseball stadium

Architect says design will reflect local art, history

By Joshua Zuber

EL PASO, Texas —

KFOX14  gets a first look at how El Paso's new downtown minor league baseball stadium will look.

Construction is set to start in the next few weeks, city officials said, as is the demolition of the current City Hall.

Then, after City Hall comes down in early April, all the major construction work to get the new $50 millionbaseball stadium will begin.

Artist renderings were presented to El Paso City Council Tuesday by Populous, the design firm hired to design the ballpark.

There will be a number of local elements incorporated into the building.

The project architect said it will be evident from exposed steel to bring back El Paso's industrial history, to a railroad house look because it is close to the Union Depot. Also, fans will be able to see downtown.

Shade will also be a big part of the design since the stadium will obviously be used during the spring and summer seasons.

Officials said the seats will be as nice as the major leagues.

But, when KFOX 14 asked what makes the baseball stadium unique to other major and minor league venues, and the architect says the four-story stadium is being built on a very small site.

"We have barely 5 1/2 acres and typically we see around seven or eight. Something like that. So for us to push everything together, it makes for a very unique scene. Something very intimate. The field dimensions are very compatible to a San Francisco type ball park,"
 said Mike Sabatini of Populous.

A city engineer said the stadium will hold nearly 10,000 people, and the baseball season is set to start in spring of 2014.

The city said the final design is due in May.

It's not clear when the first home game will be played in El Paso.
